A team of four soldiers, from different classes ideally, have to go through a level one end to the other for various reasons. The idea behind Alien Swarm is not complicated. What’s even worse, there is a special hat that you get in Team Fortress 2 if you play this game, so you might find yourself with alone on a map after all of your mates got their hats and left you for dead. The reason I’m mentioning friends is that is mainly a multiplayer game, and you need other players to help you, but the servers are not all that populated. If you and three of your closest friends are looking for a fantastic co-op game to pass the time, then you will be surprised to know that you can get Alien Swarm right now. Unlike that game, Alien Swarm has no microtransactions, and it’s simply a very well made multiplayer game with great co-op. It’s not difficult to imagine that Valve had the courage to make a really good game and make it available for free, but this happened before they decided to release Team Fortress 2 for free as well. So, a mod that turns UT2004 into a retro-style gorefest is a breath of fresh air.īut Alien Swarm is more than just a nod to old games. It was exciting and adrenaline-fuelled mayhem. To many a grizzled old gamer, the name alone conjures up the heady pre- Doom days when the scrolling shooter was king and you viewed your heavily armed hero from above or the side as you stomped around, blasting multitudes of enemies into steaming lumps. I haven't seen a mod that's so different from the formulaic norm for ages.
